Answers to Some Common Questions

Who is eligible?

Applicants must be seniors or graduates of CHS. Scholarships can be used for any post-secondary education, such as two or four-year college, technical or vocational school and even graduate school. Criteria include financial need, demonstrated probability of success at the chosen school as indicated by input from guidance counselors for seniors and information on the application for other candidates, and willingness to assume some financial responsibility through working, savings, or student loans.

How and where do I apply?

Applications are fillable online but must be printed out and mailed.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Applications must be completed and returned by mail to CHSSF, P.O. Box 315, Maplewood, NJ 07040. They will NOT be accepted at CHS.

What is the application deadline?

Applications must be postmarked no later than Tuesday, April 16, 2024 for the ’24-’25 academic year.

Do I have to be a current CHS senior to apply?

No.  Any senior or graduate of CHS can apply for a scholarship—the program is not just for graduating seniors.  You can apply for the first time years after you graduate from CHS.  For example, you can apply for a scholarship for your graduate studies, even if you didn’t apply during your undergraduate years.

Are scholarships renewable?

Yes.  This is very important (and sometimes overlooked)—scholarships are awarded for one year only but you are welcome to reapply each year for as long as you are pursuing a post-secondary education, including graduate studies.  Remember that scholarships do not renew automatically—you must reapply each year.

I plan on going to a vocational school. Can I still apply?

Yes. Need based scholarships are available for any post-secondary education including vocational and technical school.  Current scholarship recipients attend two-year colleges, four-year colleges/universities, vocational programs, certificate programs, professional licensing programs, even graduate school.

I’m going to be a graduate student—am I still eligible for a scholarship?

Yes.  CHS graduates attending graduate programs are eligible to apply for a scholarship.  Remember that scholarships do not renew automatically—you must reapply each year.

How will my scholarship be paid?

Your award is delivered in two installments, half for the fall term and half for the spring term.  The checks are made out to your school but sent to you.  It is your responsibility to deliver them to the appropriate office at your school.

When will my scholarship be paid?

Checks are written each semester and mailed in July and November.

What happens if I move or change schools?

It’s your responsibility to notify us of any address or school changes so you receive your award without delay. Your award is not based on the school you choose to attend, so choose the school you feel is best for you.

What if I decide to put off attending school, perhaps to take a gap year, after being awarded a scholarship? Or what if I need to take a break during my studies?

This is increasingly common and we understand there are many valid reasons you may choose to delay matriculating.  We simply ask that you alert us as soon as you know so that the award money can still be used for another CHS grad in that academic year.  You can then reapply when you’re ready to go on with your education.
